Valens Aqueduct

Valens Aqueduct

Valens Aqueduct was built by the Roman Emperor Valens in the late 4th century. It was a Roman aqueduct which was the major water-providing system of Constantinople.

The aqueduct was restored by several Ottoman Sultans. The aqueduct links the valley between the two of the seven hills of Constantinople where today İstanbul University (city’s oldest university, established in 15th century) and Fatih Mosque stand.

The surviving section is 921 meters long, 50 meters less than the original length. It is one of the most important landmarks of the city. Atatürk Boulevard (Atatürk Bulvarı) passes under its arches.
