Galata Mevlevi House
Galata Mevlevihanesi, house of Mevlevi’s, has been founded by Sultan Beyazit II in 1491.
Tekke’s, dervish lodge’s, first seyh (sheikh, leader) was a descendant of Mevlana Jelaleddin Rumi himself.
The building here is not the original from the 15th century. The original one was burnt down and replaced in 18th century by the current one which went through various renovations, the final one being in 2008.
Galip Dede is an important seikh of this tekke and he is burried in the courtyard of the building. He also gives his name to the narrow hill going down from here towards the Galata Tower.
The building is used as Mevlevi Museum today and provides information regarding Mevlevi Culture including outfit, various musical instruments and calligraphic tablets.
This is also where you can see the Whirling Dervish Ceremony every sunday afternoon.
