The Church of Saint Mary of Blachernae, one of Byzantium’s most revered Marian sanctuaries, was originally built in the 5th century and expanded over time. Closely linked to the nearby Blachernae Palace, it served as an important site for imperial ceremonies and pilgrimage.
Its name comes from the historic Blachernae district, located just outside the ancient city walls, where the church once stood as a spiritual landmark of Constantinople.
Famed for housing sacred relics of the Virgin Mary, the church remained a major devotional center throughout the Byzantine era. Although it has undergone several restorations due to fires and later transformations, its legacy as one of the most significant religious monuments of the city continues to draw visitors interested in Istanbul’s Byzantine heritage.
